The rivalry between Zoro and Sanji has been one of the longest-running arguments among One Piece fans: which of Luffy's two strongest crewmates is
truly the stronger one? Chapter 1197, titled "Love Is Defense", offers an answer, and it isn't the one many expected.
In the chapter, Sanji awakens Conqueror's Haki after accepting that he has to protect himself instead of continuing to hurt himself. With this, both
Zoro and Sanji now wield the rare power associated with future kings. During his monologue, Sanji defines his place in the crew: if Zoro is Luffy's
sword, he will be his shield.
Rather than ranking one above the other, Oda gives each of them a distinct and equally essential role: Zoro, the swordsman and first mate, as Luffy's
offensive blade, and Sanji, the cook with a body that seemingly never breaks, as his defence. Both are indispensable on Luffy's path to becoming
King of the Pirates.
